Sydney Opera House: Lighting the Sails

Every year Sydney is transformed into a magical world for the annual Vivid Festival.  The highlight of the event is Lighting the Sails, when the Sydney Opera House is transformed into a huge canvas for incredible light projections.

Luxx were extremely privileged to be invited by Spinifex Group to contribute visuals for the 2017 event, Audio Creatures. Working closely with the awe-inspiring Sydney Director Ash Bolland and paired with tailor-made soundscapes by Brazil’s foremost sound designer Amon Tobin.

Luxx teamed up with the talented crew at Never Sit Still and dove deep to realise Bolland’s vision of immense creatures.  Reminiscent of deep ocean life, exotic flora and alien ecosystems which consume the Opera House in a world of colour and light, transporting onlookers through a visceral and magical world.

Special thanks go out to Dan Braga, Alex Barnet, Rich Nosworthy, Nejc Polovsak and Duncan Dix. Dedicated artists who contributed their time and amazing skills to realise Ash’s vision.

    Hi Tim

Respect and congratulations for this amazing looking piece of art. That’s breathtaking, wow.

I never was in Sydney or Australia before, so i never saw the Opera House of Sydney live. Are the projections done from outside on the sails of the Opera House or from inside? Which part came from you and your team? Will you show a short peak inside in the near future? That would be fantastic.

Best regards from the land of chocolate and watches

Thank you for your kind words. The projections are from the outside, projected across the Quay. I think they use 15 projectors to keep it as bright as possible. We worked on around 8 minutes of the show at Luxx, hopefully get around to posting some behind the scenes once the festival is over.

      Thank you!
