Houdini : Smoke Simulations

Houdini Training : Smoke Simulations from Adam Swaab at helloluxx

Adam Swaab has been busy again, creating some more top-notch Houdini tutorials, exclusively available from helloluxx, in the Houdini Training : learn. Jumpstart series.

These soon-to-be-released tutorials form Volume 6 in the Jumpstart series and will cover creating a photo-real explosion with pyro, wherein Adam will be showing the entire process, everything from simulation to shading and rendering and compositing in Houdini.

Shown below are two very short movies that show the end result of one of the tutorials about smoke simulations in Houdini:

    Thanks for the post, Fleur!

These tutorials will go much further than tweaking the standard shelf tools. We’ll build all of our networks from scratch and talk about all the settings needed to create the pyro look you’re after. By the end of the tutorial, you will have an excellent fundamental understanding of pyro sims in Houdini.

If you’re struggling with pyro, or completely new to it, this will be a must-watch tutorial!

Hi just bought the fluid training and will be all over that for the next week. Really looking forward to the next one, done some destruction work in Houdini but find the rendering out and comp work quite odd. Originally a C4d user so I have been spoilt due to the perfect match between Cinema and AFX. If you can show a multipass render solution (and shader setups for that) that works well for AFX then it really will be the perfect Christmas gift.

      Hi Duncan,

Rendering is next on the tutorial roadmap, after the pyro video!

Should also mention AFX is really not the ideal compositing solution for 3D. Great for animation and mograph stuff, but for high-end multipass setups that need full 32 bit support… meh. I will show how to output all the individual passes and rebuild the beauty pass, but probably not go much further than that, in terms of compositing workflow.

Hi Adam, thanks for the reply. Actually learning Nuke now, moving information between syntheyes and Nuke for matchmoving. Really love how Nuke is put together but very different workflow to AFX.

        Any release date yet?

I am hoping to finish it up during the holiday/new year break. This one is taking a while to put together!

I’m excited for this. I’ve been learning Houdini for the past few months after using C4D for a couple of years. The Houdini rendering and compositing workflow baffles me, as do many of it’s other functions.

I hope it explains a few things! Enjoy!

Rendering is next on the tutorial roadmap, after the pyro video. I don’t think I will be covering the Houdini compositing networks. Nuke is a much better option if you want node-based compositing – so I would push you in that direction. And if you can understand Nuke, then Houdini’s COPS will be relatively simple to understand.

Hi, has been the release date for the pyro training set already? It would be great to have it before Christmas, so that I can learn in a few free holiday days. Then, the deadline hell starts again in new year… . Anyway, thanks for the great courses, Martin.

Hi Martin, not just yet I’m afraid! Hopefully soon!

Unfortunately, I’ll be working on the tutorial and hopefully finishing it up during the holidays. So, definitely not up by Christmas, but most likely will be ready right at the beginning of the new year!

Thanks for your comment. This should be complete and ready for purchase soon, Adam is wrapping it up and we will have it online as soon as we have the files.

It is finished! Took me forever to edit it. Recorded over 7 hours, edited down to 5.5 hours. It is a monster, but I think it is very good! Should be online soon. Need to upload it and get all the marketing stuff written.
