LAUBWERK PLANTS KIT 1 – SPECIES

Plants Kit 1 contains these Laubwerk Plants species:

Laubwerk - Box Elder

Box Elder

Acer negundo

A fast-growing, medium-size tree of asymmetrical and broadly round shape, often with several stems. The light green foliage with three to seven leaflets turns yellow-green in autumn. The box elder is one of the most common North American maples in cultivation and one of the most planted foreign trees in Central Europe.

Laubwerk - Red Maple

Red Maple

Acer rubrum

A medium to large size tree with loose habit and fresh green or pale green foliage. The crown shape can be asymmetrical, conical or broadly ovoid. Early Autumn colours can range from deep or scarlet red to golden yellow. Due to it’s pleasing form and majestic Autumn foliage during Indian summer, the red maple is often used as a shade tree in parks and large gardens. It is one of the most abundant and widespread trees in eastern North America.

Laubwerk - Sugar Maple

Sugar Maple

Acer saccharum

Large tree with an oval or round crown shape. The Autumn foliage is spectacular, ranging from bright yellow and orange to fluorescent “Indian summer” red-orange. One of the primary source of delicious maple syrup, the wood is also one of the hardest and densest of all maples. A favorite street and park tree because it is easy to propagate and transplant.

Laubwerk - Pauls Scarlet Hawthorn

Paul’s Scarlet Hawthorn

Crataegus laevigata ‘Paul’s Scarlet’

A compact landscape tree that produces masses of tiny, double rose and scarlet flowers in tight clusters along the branches in late spring. Dark, glossy green foliage. First widely cultivated by famed British horticulturalist William Paul in 1866, this sun-loving, drought-tolerant plant is adaptable to almost any well-drained location.

Laubwerk - Ginkgo

Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba

A large asymmetrical tree that is stiffly upright when young, aging into a broadly conical to asymmetrically round crown. Turns brilliant golden yellow in Autumn. The ginkgo is a unique species with no close living relatives, similar to fossils dating back 270 million years. Widely cultivated since early human history, the ginkgo has various uses as food and in traditional medicine.

Laubwerk - Kanzan Cherry

Kanzan Cherry

Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’

The showiest of all Japanese trees with its large pink double flowers, this tree is famously part of Washington DC’s Cherry Blossom Festival. More spectacular colours appear in Autumn, when the leaves turn from yellow-green to a reddish copper colour. Cultivated in Europe and North America, it is usually grafted on to wild cherry (Prunus avium) roots.

Laubwerk - Cypress Oak

Cypress Oak

Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’

The most common ornamental form of Quercus rubur is shaped similar to the Italian Cypress. It retains a slender and upright shape, growing into an impressive medium-size tree with a gradually broadening columnar. Leaves turn yellow-brown Autumn colours, with brown leaves remaining throughout Winter. Originally propagated from an upright tree that was found in central Europe.

Laubwerk - Red Oak

Red Oak

Quercus rubra

A large tree with dark green foliage and a broad round crown. It’s leaves turn yellow-orange to bright red in Autumn. Scattered brown leaves remain attached throughout the Winter. The Red Oak is grown in parks and large gardens as a specimen tree.

Laubwerk - Globe Robinia

Globe Robinia

Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Umbraculifera’

This small tree is popular because of its jade green foliage and attractive spherical shape. The top grafted clone forms a round and compact crown ideal for urban piazzas and gardens. The tree seldom flowers and has been widely cultivated since the 1800s.

Laubwerk - Small-leaved Lime

Small-Leaved Lime

Tilia cordata

A splendid, large tree that starts out conical in shape before growing a domed, or occasionally, a pure round crown. In the Autumn, leaves turn green-yellow or deep golden. Widely grown as ornamental trees throughout Europe starting in the 17th century and widely cultivated in northeastern America, a famous example is the boulevard Unter den Linden in Berlin.

Japanese Maple from helloluxx

Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum

Deciduous small tree or shrub with a variable, bushy habit often low branching. Dark brown, smooth bark becomes light grey when the tree matures. Small, deeply 5 to 7-lobed leaves, often colouring well in Autumn, including shades of yellow, red-purple and bronze. Small red flowers in Spring are followed by red or green winged samaras in pairs. Japanese Maples are generally grown for their attractive foliage and shape.

Pyramidal European Hornbeam from helloluxx

Pyramidal European Hornbeam

Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’

Medium-sized deciduous tree with a very compact and densely branched crown and a narrow, columnar form in youth, which gradually acquires a tear drop or oval-vase shape with age. Smooth, grey, rippling bark with distinctive muscle-like texture. Ovate, serrate, fresh green leaves are clean and attractive throughout the growing season turning golden yellow in Autumn. It’s small crown makes it very suitable as a street tree but also as a park and garden tree.

Pink-Flowering Dogwood from helloluxx

Pink-Flowering Dogwood

Cornus florida var. rubra

Attractive small deciduous tree, or large shrub, with a low-branching, broadly-pyramidal but somewhat flat-topped habit and wide-spreading form. Warty grey alligator bark on mature trees. Oval, dark green opposite leaves with arcuate venation turn attractive shades of intensive red in Autumn. Large, very showy flowers consist of four showy, pink to reddish pink, petal-like bracts with yellowish-green centres. Produces red berries from early to late fall. One of the most beautiful of the native North American flowering trees with outstanding ornamental features.

De Vilmorin Handkerchief Tree from helloluxx

De Vilmorin Handkerchief Tree

Davidia involucrata var. vilmoriniana

Medium-sized deciduous tree with a broad oval to pyramidal habit and scaly bark. Bright green, broadly ovate, alternate leaves, which might turn a beautiful yellow in Autumn. Small, dark green flower-clusters each subtended by a pair of creamy-white, ovate bracts, which are said to resemble dangling handkerchiefs, or doves resting on the branches. Ovoid greenish-brown fruits. Named after French missionary and naturalist Father Armand David, who was also the first westerner to describe the giant panda. This prized ornamental tree with its striking display of floral bracts in late spring was once considered to be the Holy Grail of exotic flora. It holds an Award of Garden Merit from the British Royal Horticulture Society.

Copper Beech from helloluxx

Copper Beech

Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropunicea’

Large deciduous tree with a conical, pyramidal to rounded habit and a, usually, low canopy. Attractive light or dark grey, smooth bark. Elliptic to ovate, glossy, smooth, alternate leaves. In spring, eye-catching foliage ermerges in copper red, which will fade to deep crimson maroon purple as the Summer progresses, turning deep orange to copper in Autumn. Although deciduous, the leaves generally stay on the tree well into Winter. The ornamental tree makes one of the finest specimens for large scale, temperate landscapes, perfect for giving contrast to an otherwise green landscape.

European Ash from helloluxx

European Ash

Fraxinus excelsior

One of Europe’s largest native deciduous trees with a broad, rounded, spreading habit. Smooth bark on young trees, becoming thick and vertically fissured on old trees. Large, dark green leaves are pinnately compound, divided into pairs of lance-shaped leaflets, tipped by a single one, which creates a light feathery arrangement to the foliage. Leaves are often among the last to open in spring, and the first to fall in Autumn, often in dull green if an early frost strikes. Occasionally with an attractive green golden to yellow Autumn colour.

Honey Locust 'Sunburst' from helloluxx

Honey Locust ‘Sunburst’

Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Sunburst’

Elegant, small deciduous tree with an irregular, erect or vase-shaped form and a loosely conical to broadly asymmetrical crown. Thornless trunk with dark grey or black bark, smooth on young trees, becoming stringy and vertically fissured on old trees. Bipinnately compound leaves with small leaflets, initially light green to bright golden-yellow, gradually changing to bright green in Summer, then back to golden-yellow again in Autumn. Inconspicuous flowers. Fruitless. A hardy and good lawn tree with finely textured foliage, that drops leaves early, leafs out late, and produces filtered shade.

Norbert's Magnolia from helloluxx

Norbert’s Magnolia

Magnolia x soulangeana ‘Norbertii’

Select deciduous small, short-stem tree, initially funnel-shaped, upright, later expansive and broad, rounded habit. Smooth grey bark with coarse texture. Obovate, alternate, stout, fresh green leaves, turning pale yellow in Autumn. Large and stout pink to purple from outside, white from inside, tulip-shaped flowers emerge in an abundance on bare wood in mid-Spring. The magnolia, a hybrid created by man, makes a wonderful floral display, filling the air with a pleasant aromatic fragrance.

Lombardy Poplar from helloluxx

Lombardy Poplar

Populus nigra ‘Italica’

Large, vigorous, narrowly columnar deciduous tree with erect habit. The bark is grey or light green on young trees and new growth, but becomes dark grey, thickened, and ridged or furrowed on older, larger trunks. Ovate to rhomboidal bright green leaves, turning a bright golden yellow in Autumn before dropping. Propagation is by cuttings since this cultivar is a male clone.

Black Cherry Plum 'Nigra' from helloluxx

Black Cherry Plum ‘Nigra’

Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’

Small, deciduous, upright tree with a rounded to pyramidal habit. Dark brown, furrowed bark. Deep blackish-purple leaves. LAUBWERK PLANTS KIT 1 - SPECIES

Due to it's pleasing form and majestic Autumn foliage during Indian summer, the red maple is often used as a shade tree in parks and large gardens. It is one of the most abundant and widespread trees in eastern North America.

Laubwerk - Sugar Maple

Sugar Maple

Acer saccharum

Large tree with an oval or round crown shape. The Autumn foliage is spectacular, ranging from bright yellow and orange to fluorescent "Indian summer" red-orange. One of the primary source of delicious maple syrup, the wood is also one of the hardest and densest of all maples. A favorite street and park tree because it is easy to propagate and transplant.

Laubwerk - Pauls Scarlet Hawthorn

Paul's Scarlet Hawthorn

Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet'

Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan'

The showiest of all Japanese trees with its large pink double flowers, this tree is famously part of Washington DC's Cherry Blossom Festival. More spectacular colours appear in Autumn, when the leaves turn from yellow-green to a reddish copper colour. Cultivated in Europe and North America, it is usually grafted on to wild cherry (Prunus avium) roots.

Laubwerk - Cypress Oak

Cypress Oak

Quercus robur 'Fastigiata'

The most common ornamental form of Quercus rubur is shaped similar to the Italian Cypress. It retains a slender and upright shape, growing into an impressive medium-size tree with a gradually broadening columnar. Leaves turn yellow-brown Autumn colours, with brown leaves remaining throughout Winter. Originally propagated from an upright tree that was found in central Europe.

Laubwerk - Red Oak

Red Oak

Quercus rubra

A large tree with dark green foliage and a broad round crown. It's leaves turn yellow-orange to bright red in Autumn. Scattered brown leaves remain attached throughout the Winter. The Red Oak is grown in parks and large gardens as a specimen tree.

Laubwerk - Globe Robinia

Globe Robinia

Robinia pseudoacacia 'Umbraculifera'
